Our History
By Diane Smith – Historian
In 1937, following a series of educational meetings sponsored by Picker Mfg. Co. at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, it was proposed that the “X-ray Technicians” of this state organize a society for mutual benefit and interest. Two planning meetings were held for this purpose on Nov.18 & 26, 1937. Committee members consisted of Miss E. Drauss, Miss Marjorie Parker, Mr. W. McKinley, Mr. W. Boyles, Mr. Morris and Miss Esther Williams.
On Dec. 2, the first meeting for such a society was held at Hartford Hospital and the CT Society of X-ray Technicians was officially founded on Jan 11, 1938. Miss Esther Williams, one of the meeting organizers, was chosen as President until the 1st Annual Meeting, three months later in April, when Kenneth Sturtz was elected as the new President.
The By-laws of the Society at the time called for 8 educational meetings annually, scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month from Oct – May. The board consisted of 6 members: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, Program Committee Chairman, and Nominating Committee Chairman. These people were elected at the last meeting held in May and assumed their duties in October at the first meeting.
The following year, 1939, Laurence Cowles was elected President, followed by H. Linsley Ruwet in 1940. It was during his term that the CSXT applied for affiliation with the American Society of X-ray Technicians which it received on Nov. 22, 1940.
Road to Licensure

Juris Patrylak of Branford died Sunday February 24, 2019 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Cherylyn Hubbard Patrylak. Juris was born October 30, 1946 in Ettlingen, Germany, son of the late Walter and Kataryna Diyzypilska Patrylak. His career as a Radiologic Technologist began with his training at Yale New Haven Medical Center.
He enlisted in the US Navy and served as a hospital corpsman at the US Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, NH, as well as aboard the hospital ship, USS Sanctuary, during the Vietnam conflict. After discharge from the service, his professional career in Management would include, Administrative Manager of Radiology at the UCONN Health Center, Manager of Radiology at Sharon Hospital, and Assistant Director of Radiology Services at Waterbury Hospital. During this time, he continued his education by achieving an A.S. degree for SCCC (now Gateway), B.S. degree in Radiologic Sciences from Quinnipiac University, and a M.S. degree in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He was also an active member of the ASRT, ARRT, AHRA and CSRT. Juris was a Certified Radiology Administrator. In his spare time, Juris kept busy as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 428 in Branford, enjoying many adventures with his son and fellow scouters. He was a member of American Legion Post 83 and VFW Post 12106 in Branford, and a member of the Veterans Parade Committee.
Juris was also honored to be chosen as the Grand Marshal in The Town of Branford’s 2005 Memorial Day Parade. In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark J. and Lyn Ann Patrylak of East Haven; his brother Paul Patrylak of Branford; and his cousin Maria and Roman Radawiec of Branford. The CSRT mourns the passing of Josephine (Jo) Picone, the longest serving, active member of our organization. She passed away on November 23, 2017 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 88. Jo was a dedicated lifelong member of the CSRT, as well as the New England Conference of Radiologic Technologists and the ASRT. She joined the CSRT in 1957 and participated in and chaired numerous committees including being editor of the Roentgen Ray Newsletter. She was a practicing radiologic technologist for 67 years and at the time of her death was the oldest active R.T. in the U.S.
Jo co-chaired the Legislative Committee in the early days and was a tireless fighter for licensure at the Capitol for decades. The Radiation Safety Bill was finally signed into law in 1993 by Gov. Weicker. But she did not stop there and continued her efforts at the national level representing the CSRT in Washington D.C. pursuing the passage of the C.A.R.E. Bill. These efforts led to her receiving the John Archer Outstanding Achievemment Award in 1994 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, the CSRT’s highest honor. In 2015, this award was renamed the Josephine Picone Lifetime Achievement Award. Her total dedication to her profession was demonstrated at our annual conference this October – 6 weeks before her death – which she attended and was honored to present this award to Bill Hennessy.
Jo lived by the words of baseball legend Jackie Robinson whom she admired – “ A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Her spirit, love and dedication to her family and profession are a remarkable testament to this and she will be sorely missed. Jo is survived by her 4 loving children, a sister, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren to which she was totally dedicated. Our condolences go out to all of her family and friends.COCONUT CREEK, Fla. — Jonathan Anthony Santarsiero, of Coconut Creek, Fla., went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 27, 2020.
